SustainabiliSEA: SPSF x TPB Create Hope in the Communities of Taytay, Palawan

On June 5-6, 2024, the communities of Brgy. Casian in Taytay, Palawan experienced a transformative event titled “SustainabiliSEA: SPSF x TPB Create Hope: Bridging Sustainable Tourism with Environmental Welfare and Community Empowerment.” This Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, led by the Save Palawan Seas Foundation (SPSF) in collaboration with the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), aimed to promote sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, and community empowerment. Earlier this year, TPB proudly selected SPSF as one of their CSR partners, recognizing their shared commitment to fostering sustainable development and environmental stewardship in Palawan.

The first day featured the ceremonial turnover of solar street lights to Sitio Calabugtong. These lights were received by Hon. Teddy Tabulod, Barangay Captain of Casian, and Mrs. Maribeth Talamisan, Sitio Leader of Sitio Calabugtong. This key moment was followed by a series of engaging activities, including games, a communal feast, and the distribution of gifts to students and teachers from Calabugtong Elementary School, Calampisao Elementary School, and Dinet Elementary School. Despite the rain, the community’s spirit was undamped, and the day’s success was celebrated with joy and gratitude.

The second day focused on marine conservation with a series of informative seminars. Mr. Jhon Philip Alorro and Mr. Sherwin Zamudio from the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist – Fisheries Division led discussions on marine conservation and mangrove planting. Ms. Ruby Catherine Apa provided insights into coral propagation basics, followed by Mr. Apollo Regalo from the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development, who discussed the RA 9147 or Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.

The highlight of the second day was a hands-on coral restoration activity. Participants, including sitio leaders, members, and the local barangay unit of Casian, engaged in coral restoration using the ‘branching’ method, placing platforms underwater to foster new coral growth. This practical activity underscored the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

The “SustainabiliSEA” event exemplified the power of collaboration and community engagement. With the dedicated support of the Tourism Promotions Board, the event not only illuminated the streets of Sitio Calabugtong but also enlightened the minds of its residents on the importance of sustainable practices. The event successfully achieved its goals, promoting sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, and community development. The community was overwhelmingly positive, with residents expressing their happiness and gratitude for this initiative. They appreciated the efforts made to educate and empower them, recognizing the long-term benefits for their environment and livelihood.

The Save Palawan Seas Foundation and the Tourism Promotions Board look forward to continuing their partnership, working together to protect Palawan’s natural beauty and uplift its communities. This event has set a promising precedent for future initiatives aimed at fostering a sustainable and empowered Palawan.
